School for the Kids

Sometimes I wonder what to do about Scout. Her and Jem brought a guest home for lunch from school. A Cunningham no less. His Father’s a client of mine. He can’t pay in money so he did me some grand favors. Anyway, we sat down to eat, and soon after, our guest Walter asks for the syrup. Cal procured the syrup for him and he proceeded to pour it on his meat and vegetables. A bit strange but I ignored it. SCOUT on the other hand, began to chastise his eating habits, and as a result, was summoned to the kitchen by Calpurnia. I can only assume that Scout was firmly scolded. *Sigh*, children. Scout was made to eat in the kitchen. Then, her, Jem, and Walter all returned to class and I returned to may cases. Upon my return home, Scout and Jem came to meet me. When i questioned her about school, Scout seemed downtrodden, so I decided not to pursue the situation. She seemed happy when Cal made her scrumptious Crackling bread though. When Reading Time came Scout told me all that happened at school. Apparently she had a “misunderstanding” with Miss Caroline, her teacher. She had told Scout that she couldn’t read in school or at home anymore. Apparently I “taught her all wrong” according to Scout. She even suggested I teach her at home. No, It told her, I have to make a living. Then she talked about the Ewells only going for the first day of school each year. That alarmed me. The Ewells have to be one of the most disgraceful families in all of Maycomb county! I know as a lawyer and as a man that all people deserve the same treatment, but they’re a sick pack of humans. I then explained their situation to Scout and we came to a compromise about the School. It was a long day indeed in the Finch home.
